Profile of an independent investor? Print
Do you have the profile of an independent investor? If no, how and where does one get assistance? As explained further in the main text, you should consider the following:
  • The necessary effort to acquire a good foundation in investing is not within the grasp of everyone;
  • The technical revolution in computing and internet usage is not simply a luxury for the independent investor today. These tools are essential to get the knowledge, organize oneself and act as if you were the employee of an institutional investor who passes his days before computer screens;
  • Know your limits – for example, know when to seek help (if you do not understand an investment product, get more information on it, or go onto something else), or know the degree of risk appropriate to your personal situation and to your profile;
  • Lastly, and most importantly, do you draw personal satisfaction from the independent management of your investments?

There's something in people, you might even call it a little bit of a gambling instinct . . . I tell people [investing] should be dull. It shouldn't be exciting. Investing should be more like watching paint dry or watching grass grow. If you want excitement, take $800 and go to Las Vegas . Paul Samuelson.
